Quality has a Name - "Das Seekarhaus"

History of the Hotel

Einst und jetztHotel "Das Seekarhaus" has its origins back in the 17th century, as former housing for workers in the local silver and copper mines.

The owners of the Seekar Silver & Copper Company began remodeling the building into a hotel in 1923, with it subsequently being rechristened as Sporthotel Seekar.

However, the business foundered financially and had to be sold to the German & Austrian Alpine Association.
But even back then, people recognized the tourism potential of the area around Obertauern.  The purchase of the Seekarhaus created an important foundation for the development of winter sport.

After the Second World War, a major building boom began in the region of the Radstädter Tauern.
Numerous lifts, tourism businesses and hotels were constructed. Das Seekarhaus was now one of the oldest establishments in Obertauern and, because its amenities were no longer up to prevailing standards, could only be rented out as a hostel for skiers.

The original character of a ski lodge was lost, so the Austrian Alpine Association decided in 1992 to sell the hotel to the Krings family. After 6 years of tough struggles with local authorities, permission for the construction project was finally granted . Das Seekarhaus was completely demolished and the main building reconstructed according to the plans of 1923. Two side wings were planned to the right and left of the main building. Construction took 2 years and, in November 2000, Das Seekarhaus reopened, resplendent in its new glory.
